You burnt her in flames
And lit a speck (diya) in front of her idol.
You beat her black and blue
And caressed her scarlet red.
You forced apart her clothes in seclusion
And feared if ever your sister met someone like you.
You bartered position and rank for skin
And called her loose, whore and other names.
You brought her along with her dad’s sweat
And found glory in calling yourself her man.
You confined her to walls of gold
And expected her to enjoy the free world.
You meant to kill her in the womb,
One through which you came from.
Aren’t you truly a man ?
This poem and painting is a creative collaboration between the poet Rahul and the artist Sufia Khatoon as part of the 6th Woman Scream International Art and Poetry Festival 2016, the Kolkata chapter of which is being held on March 26.
