Life and Still Life

Fifteen-year-old Maimoona creates artwork that comes to life, almost emerging out the canvas. Even a still life looks as if it can be picked up in real.

I’m Maimoona Saifee, a 15-year-old amateur artist from Bangalore. I’ve always loved making and looking at art, but it was only in 2020 when it became a very consistent hobby. Not only my art but my way of perceiving art transformed drastically in the past year.

I’ve made many mistakes, but most of the times I manage to work around it and learn from them and each mistake brings me closer to my destination. There are times when I lose my patience while working on something, but switching up mediums and taking time off from that piece really helps me regain focus and come back with a new mindset.

I often find myself looking at sculptures and renaissance art, as well as studying about lighting, anatomy and history of ancient art. My favourite mediums continue to be oil, watercolour and charcoal.

For me, Art is a necessity to maintain a tranquil mind but at the same time, it creates an overwhelming sense of uneasiness. “Art is something so vast that we’re incapable of completely comprehending it. It enables us to find and lose ourselves at the same time.”
