St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. School, Janakpuri, is all set to hold its 14th St. Mark’s Annual Interschool On the Spot Painting Competition on November 22, 2013 in the school premises. This annual event that taps into the artistic talents of school children from Pre-primary till Std. XII, attracts more than 50 participating schools every year.
The competition prefers to classify participating students according to their class or standard, rather than broad age-groups, in order to maintain uniformity among participants in terms of the ability to conceptualize and execute the themes given. A maximum of five participants per class are permitted.
The panel of judges comprising eminent artists, art critics and people associated with the world of fine arts choose the themes that are given to the participants on the spot. In the previous years, artists who have presided over the competition as judges include Rajeev Lochan, Suneet Chopra, Soumendra Lahiri and cartoonist E P Unny.
“We have no role or say in the choice of themes. We leave it to the judges to decide on what challenges they would like to give as themes,” Goutam Mondal, Teacher Coordinator of the On the Spot Painting competition told Learning & Creativity.
The topics explore concepts that appeal to children and encourage them to give flight to their creative imagination such as ‘a visit to a historical place or a hill station’ or ‘my classroom’ or ‘a village fair’ or current affairs topics such as ‘a political rally’. “We make a clear distinction between topics that are related to painting and those that require poster making. The judges carefully choose topics that would be best reflected in paintings and not posters,” added Mondal.
Last year, the Rolling Trophy (Seniors) was picked up by Raisina Bengali School, Mandir Marg while the Rolling Trophy (Juniors) was won by the host school but since it was not a contestant in the competition, the Juniors Trophy went to St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. School, Meera Bagh. The Rolling Trophies are awarded to schools that win the maximum prizes.
The Trophy for Collage Making was jointly won by Vishwa Bharti Public School, Sec 6 Dwarka and SS Mota Singh Sr. Sec. Model School, Janakpuri.
