Behind The Scenes
Amar Prem is the Hindi remake of the Bengali hit film Nishipadma (meaning the lotus of the night). The Bengali film starred Uttam Kumar and Sabitri and became one of the classics of Bengali cinema because of its strong script, storyline and spontaneous performances. Nishipadma is a Bengali short story written by the renowned writer Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, whose novel Pather Panchali attained world attention when Satyajit Ray made it into a film as his directorial debut.
Arabinda Mukherjee wrote the screenplay for both the Hindi and the Bengali versions. Ramesh Pant, a longtime-collaborator with Samanta penned the Hindi dialogues.
Shakti Samanta remade the film in Hindi but retained its Calcutta locale and cultural backdrop. And hence you see a dhoti-clad Rajesh Khanna singing “Yeh kya hua…” (a major departure from his typical city slick debonair image).
It is believed that Shakti Samanta had originally planned to shoot the song “Chingari koi bhadke“ on the Ganga with the Howrah Bridge on the backdrop. However, when teeming crowds collected on the banks of the river to watch superstar Rajesh Khanna shoot, the crew had to cancel the schedule. Later, a set of the river with the Howrah Bridge as silhouette was created in the studios and the song was shot in a water tank, with the crew filming in knee-deep water.
