Here’s what you’ll need:
A clear bottle
Water
Vegetable Oil
Food Colouring
Alka Seltzer
A funnel (optional)
- First fill your bottle 1/4 of the way full with water.
- Next add vegetable oil using a funnel to fill the bottle.
- Add some food colouring (watch as it sinks down into the water).
- Finally add a few pieces of alka seltzer that have been broken up.
Try with different colored food coloring and add more or less alkaline seltzer for varied effects. You can even put a lid on your bottle for use another day!
How it works:
When you add alkaline seltzer, the carbon dioxide that is produced rises to the surface bringing water and food coloring along with it. When the carbon dioxide is released at the top of the bottle, the water and food coloring sink back down because it is more dense than the oil.
