Painting is a beautiful poem by legendary poet-lyricist-filmmaker Gulzar. Sunita Singh and Dr Ampat Koshy present a translation and transcreation of this visually evocative poem.

पेंन्टिंग!

 
रात कल गहरी नींद में थी जब
एक ताज़ा सफेद कैनवस पर
आतिशीं लाल सुर्ख रंगों से
मैंने रोशन किया था इक सूरज

सुबह तक जल गया था वो कैनवस
राख बिखरी हुई थी कमरे में….!

THE TRANSLATION

 
Painting

Yesterday when night was in deep slumber
On a fresh white canvas
With fiery red colours
I lit up a sun

That canvas got burnt up by morning
The ashes were scattered in the room…!
 

AFTER GULZAR: A TRANSCREATION

 
Yesterday, when the night drowned
I set the sun aflame
with reds
on a white canvas

that kept burning till it exploded, this morn
scattering ashes everywhere…!
