Grass

I too, wish to savor the smell of grass by downing it as green liquor.
By Jibonananda Das (Bengali)
Translated by Amitendu Palit

Grass- PoemA soft green light
like the tender lemon leaf,
fills the earth at daybreak.
The deer tear into the aroma of green grass,
like the unripe shaddock.
I too, wish to savor the smell of grass
by downing it as green liquor.
I probe the contours of grass and
rub its eyes with mine.
The wings of grass have my feather.
I take birth as grass, within it,
alighting from
the delicious darkness
of some dense mother-grass.
