Queen is such a whacky, delightful, saucy laugh riot that you wonder if its the best movie ever on women. A bride, all set for ‘viriginity ke vrat todne’ gets dumped on eve of marriage and chooses to go alone on her honeymoon trip to Paris. Her parents agree, to what gives their child utmost happiness.
With names like Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Kangana Ranaut & RajkummarRao, you expect a quality product. But Queen is six sigma certified. Rajkummar Rao is so brilliant in garb of the unsure, egoistic boy that even his pleading ‘I love you’s’ fall just short of complete conviction. By which time the viewer’s heart is only beating for Kangana. In a scene when her chef boss lures her to kiss, you want her to reciprocate to get a fleeting moment of happiness.
There is a segment when Kangana is breaking free from her distraught state, thanks to few pints and tonnes of craziness – dancing in front of an uninterested cab driver, blurting random lines, crying atop a taxi. It reminded of Amitabh Bachchan’s solo drunk performances (Satte Pe Satta, Hum, Amar Akbar Anthony) at his prime.
Kangana makes Queen, the best movie/power packed performance of 2014 (so far). She is in between a women centric trilogy and we eagerly await her next release ‘Revolver Rani’.
Amidst plethora of unforgettable scenes, I choose to jot the messages Queen gives:
– You need to find your own happiness and not be dependent on others.
– As parents your ego should never supercede you role as pillar of support.
– Everyone needs friendship and love – and both remain much wider words than one imagines. They need no language or ‘something in common’ to flourish. (The film is filled with scenes where multiple nationalities are talking own languages, and yet they connect)
– Do not keep pre-conceived notions/inhibitions about the world (whether meeting a prostitute, a waitress or a tall burly black man). Keep faith in humanity.
Queen comes at the right time for India, for Bollywood. Only 4 women centric movies (Parineeta, Dushman, Mili, English Vinglish) have touched the Indian lady on commonly related issues. Queen bats stoutly for women empowerment.
Advice: Must must watch in hall, twice. At 2 am, 90% full hall at Singapore was roaring with laughter.
