A sensitively depicted poetic piece on the life of an autistic child, and the difference he can make to the world, for the Autism Special Edition I of ‘Learning and Creativity’.

Autism Awareness Special Edition I

By Himali Narang
doves
Sing like flying doves
I want to catch the birds

Come with me, teacher
Hold my little finger

Tell me more about this strange world
See it along with me

Holding my little finger
You will see it differently

Your clouds bear significance
Shapes comely of rabbits, mine

I dream of silver ribbons
Flowing rivers glisten

Magic of light
Enticing magnetising colours

I want to give my mother
The flowers in my heart

Sing like flying doves
I want to catch the birds

But I let them sing
Tinkling bells of desires many

Soft cheesy moon
The crow on my terrace craves

How I wish
Plucking it , I could give it away

Tiny frogs in match boxes I save
As raindrops in an inverted umbrella wave

So much fun
Splashing a rave

When my knee bleeds
I am not so hurt

It doesn’t matter so much
Your looking away

Is something that makes me furious
You keep saying again and again

Look in my eyes
Look at me

And I simply cannot
What difference will that make?

The Significant League is a Facebook literary group which was started by a person who has a child with autism and hence has a special interest in it which explains why every April Autism Awareness month the group tries to do something connected with autism. This time, as for last year, it has been to trying to get its members to write poems on autism. Some very fine poems have come up as result.
